Der Rosenkavalier with Carlos Kleiber conducting, was one of the highlights of my career. He was such a rara avis, and the excitement generated by his performances was something I hadn't experienced before. We gave three performances in Vienna: one was live on TV, and the video was made from a mix of two shows. Then we went to Japan for six more performances in Tokyo, and they were perhaps more relaxed, but the first night in Vienna was unforgettable. Kleiber hadn't conducted there for 9 years, I believe, and everyone was afraid he might cancel, so the roar from the public when he appeared on the podium seemed to last for ever! FL |
